Halloween Activities for Kids
1. Pumpkin Decorating Party
Pumpkin decorating is a great activity for all the family to get involved in, yes, it’s even a great Halloween activity for older kids.
One of the easiest and safest ways to carve a pumpkin is by using templates which are readily available on the internet. Also, another handy tip is that you can use standard cookie cutters that you might already have in a kitchen drawer. You can use these to gently indent the shape onto the pumpkin, this then creates an outline for you to carve with a carving tool.
However, carving pumpkins can be tricky for the younger kids in the family, so there are several no-carve options which you can try such as; painting them in different colours, using stickers, or glow-in-the-dark tape to make different patterns or you can even add some googly eyes or pipe-cleaner spider legs for extra fun.
Don’t forget to scoop the pumpkin flesh into a separate bowl which can then be used to make a comforting curry, yummy pumpkin soup or muffins.
2. Trick-or-Treat Treasure Hunt
This is a great free Halloween activity for kids, if trick-or-treating isn’t your thing (or you want to add a little extra magic) as all you need to do is make some fun clues and hide treats or small toys around the house or garden for them to find.
The key to a really good treasure hunt is to have lots of fun and spooky clues along with plenty of hiding places that will be easy for your kids to find. The number of clues you give can depend on the kids’ ages and how long you want the treasure hunt to last. The older they are the longer and more difficult the hunt can be.
If clue making isn’t your thing, then why not try a Halloween scavenger hunt instead? All you have to do is give the kids a list of Halloween related things to find and set a time limit.
3. Monster Dance Party
This is such a good activity to get your kids dancing off their sugar rush after an evening of trick or treating, or if you are holding a Halloween party.
You can easily create a Halloween playlist full of classic and modern spooky tunes for them to show off their fabulous dance moves to. If you are having a party, then make a party statement with decorations or just add some glow sticks and fake cobwebs for an instant party vibe.
4. Spooky Storytime
Spooky story time is a lovely way to bring a little Halloween magic indoors especially for little ones. This is a cosy and imaginative activity that builds excitement for Halloween night while keeping little ones engaged and entertained.
Kids can gather around with blankets, flashlights, or even glow sticks while you dim the lights to set the mood.
Choose age-appropriate tales — like friendly ghost adventures, silly monster stories, or not-too-creepy folktales, to keep things fun rather than frightening. You can even make it interactive by letting kids add their own twists to the tale or by adding your own sound effects.
5. Halloween Movie Night
A Halloween movie night is a perfect and cosy Halloween activity for kids and works great for kids of all ages.
You can set the mood by decorating the living room with some string lights, paper decorations and lanterns then pile up blankets and pillows for a comfy feel. Choose family-friendly films such as Hotel Transylvania, Casper, Hocus Pocus or The Addams Family to keep things seasonal but not too scary.
You can make the night extra special with themed snacks such as scary cupcakes, popcorn served in orange cups, or jelly worms.
For an added twist, encourage kids to dress up in their favourite Halloween costume or onesie, turning the movie night into a mini party full of laughs and spooky fun.
